WORLD MASTERS ORIENTEERING CHAMPIONSHIPS 8-16 JULY

orienteers from all over the world to conquer the Sprint qualifications
Over 3,000 35 athletes from 40 countries took to the field for the first race of the international kermesse.
Appointment on Monday 11 July in Vieste with the final for the assignment of the Sprint distance titles.
It will continue on 13-14 July with the Middle and on 16 July with the Long in Foresta Umbra.
Started today in Peschici with the qualifications for the Sprint final the World Masters Orienteering Championships, the over 35 orienteering World Championships in Gargano organized by the International Orienteering Federation, the Italian Federation of Sport Orientation and the WMOC Committee in collaboration with Sport and Health, Puglia Region, Puglia and Asset Regione Puglia, in addition to the patronage of the Ministry of Tourism and the Province of Foggia and the synergy of 14 Municipalities (Vieste, Peschici, Vico del Gargano, Monte Sant’Angelo, San Marco in Lamis, San Giovanni Rotondo, Carpino, Apricena, Rodi Garganico, Cagnano Varano, San Nicandro Garganico, Mattinata, Lesina, Ischitella).
The 3 thousand athletes from 40 countries were able to put themselves to the test in the first competition of the event on a particularly demanding course, as told by Gabriele Viale, Director General of the WMOC 2022 Committee: “The Sprint qualifying track was conceived in two parts. the first was very streamlined, which allowed the athletic skills to emerge above all, while the second was very technical, which put the participants in considerable difficulty. In fact, taking a running pace higher than that of reading, many orienteers made significant mistakes. The historic center of Peschici has definitely put everyone to the test thanks to the continuous changes in the level of its typical, really challenging stairways. Tomorrow the meeting will be in Vieste for the final “.

Before the start of the competitions, on Saturday 9 July, the Tourism and Sport conference: Orienteering “The major sporting events in a tourism key” of Sport and Health, with the intervention of the President and CEO Vito Cozzoli, together with the WMOC Committee at the Pugnochiuso Resort.
Afterward, again in Vieste, the inaugural ceremony took place which saw the participation of institutional representatives and athletes, who paraded through the streets of the historic center accompanied by the warm embrace of the citizens.
